Stockfield is responsible for the overall marketing and promotion of Hyperion and Voice imprint titles. In addition, she oversees the ePublishing and digital media direction for Hyperion, which includes eBook management and driving new platform development on emerging technologies. She also manages partnership opportunities for Hyperion. Previously, Stockfield served as VP for the Disney Channel & Jetix Digital Media Group (now Disney XD) where she oversaw development efforts of applications for the Disney-ABC Television Group's kids channels and brands including DisneyChannel.com, PlayhouseDisney.com, and RadioDisney.com.

Stockfield joined Disney in January 2006 from Cartoon Network, where she served as Senior Director, Marketing. During her eight years there, she oversaw marketing efforts related to the launch of numerous original series, spearheaded the creation of pro-social and multi-cultural marketing initiatives, and played an integral role in the original launch of CartoonNetwork.com. Apple Updates iPods

Apple released the latest version of its popular iPhone on Tuesday, the iPhone 4S. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced updates to the iPod Nano and iPod Touch. Lower prices and feature and style upgrades will arrive just in time for the holiday shopping season.

The new Touch is Apple's most popular iPod and will now be available in black and white. It will also get a $30 price cut to $199 for 8GB of storage, $299 for 32 GB and $399 for 64GB. The Touch will run Apple's new iOS5 operating system, maintaining its status as an iPhone without a phone. It will ship October 12.

The Nano is receiving a different upgrade. For people who use the 1.5 inch screen as a clock, they will now have 16 clock faces to choose from. The Mickey Mouse watch is now available and Mickey's hands spin around to tell time. It's also lower in price, $129 for 8GB, $149 for 16GB and $49 for 2 GB.

U.S. e-book Sales Dominate Print

Move over hardcovers, make room for the tablet! For the first time in history, e-book sales have topped the sales of hardcovers and paperbacks in every category. The American Association of Publishers attributes the rising popularity of these unique devices to their portability and wide range of books available. Instead of dusty bookshelves crowded with aging tomes, consumers can build their own electronic libraries on a kindle, nook, or iPad. Prices are competitive and are even available with Wi-Fi, allowing books to be read anywhere.

The great success of e-readers does not come without its disadvantages, however. Profit margins are smaller for publishers and authors are demanding higher royalties. In order to compete with the growing market, authors may cut staff or minimize promotion for their new work.

The popularity of e-books only seems to keep growing. Forget turning pages and losing a bookmark, swiping is the new way to go! Head over to your local Barnes & Noble to get great hands-on experience with the nook, their version of the e-reader. Once you try it, it will be the next item on your wish list!

Apple's iPad Remains Popular After One Year

Over 15 million customers have purchased Apple's wildly popular iPad, making it mainstream. News reports show customers around the world waiting in long lines to get their hands on the iPad 2. Many technology experts were skeptical about the purpose of a tablet since it cannot carry out as many functions as a computer.

The iPad has been so successful because people constantly find new ways to use the innovative device. Customers discovered reading eBooks and surfing the Web was better on the couch instead of being hunched over a desktop. Things they never did on a computer were now fun on a tablet. Applications that seemed out of place on computers with keyboards suddenly made sense on a 9.7-inch slate of glass and metal.

According to research on iPad usage, a tablet does not have to do everything a more powerful computer can. The iPad's user-friendly touchscreen interface has contributed to its wide appeal. iPad owners surf the web, check-email and play games on their devices. The wide variety of applications allows the iPad to cater to an extremely broad audience. The iPad 2 has enjoyed great success since its release earlier this month, and Apple is now the leading competition for the tablet market.

Keeping Your Facebook Private

Facebook can leave a lot out in the open if you're not careful. Adjusting your privacy settings is paramount, especially when applying for internships. No one wants their future employer to be able to view pictures from spring break. Here are a few easy steps to protect your privacy:

1. Do not have information available that you want everyone to see. To protect your identity, be careful posting personal information. If you have to think twice about posting certain pictures or videos, they should not be posted.

2. Create a separate account if you plan on using Facebook for business affairs. This is an easy way to keep friends and family separate from employer contacts.

3. Frequently check your privacy settings! Stay away from default settings; they allow more sharing than what most people are comfortable with.

4. Beware of applications. They can acquire your personal information and you do not know what they will do with that information.

5. Do not use the same password for your Facebook account as your ATM account or Amazon.com account. This makes it very easy for hackers to access your information.

Although most of our information is out in the open in the digital age, protecting your privacy will benefit you in the long run. Always remember to think about the consequences before posting something!

TweetLouder: The Home of Your Favorite Bands

Forging a connection with our favorite musicians and bands has become a lot easier over the years. Instead of poring through magazines reading in-depth interviews, consumers are now able to follow their beloved artists on Twitter and have access to their websites. Twitter has developed a whole new platform for music lovers to interact with artists such as Britney Spears, Jay-Z and Drake.

Twitter has recently launched TweetLouder, an application that goes through your iTunes or Pandora account to show you your favorite bands. The application then reveals the Twitter accounts of the musicians you prefer. You are free to follow any of the artists and are even able to see their future shows.

Twitter is an excellent and convenient way to discover the most current world events. Establishing a Twitter account will allow you to never miss a beat with the most entertaining, fascinating and intellectual people of the world!

Apple Plans to Launch iPhone 5

Put away those BlackBerrys and hide your Androids! Apple is set to launch the iPhone 5 this summer, the newest generation of its wildly popular smartphone. According to The New York Times, the phone will be "completely redesigned" and will run on a chip capable of supporting AT&T and Verizon. There is also a possibility that the device will support other carriers, offering a more varied lineup for consumers.

The iPhone 5 will be equipped with NFC (near field communication), which is a high frequency technology enabling data exchanges between two devices that are near one another. This iPhone becomes smarter with Siri, an application that listens to questions spoken or typed and then provides answers. Apple's new device will be competing directly with the voice search and voice actions available from Google Android. There might also be a cloud version of iTunes, where consumers would be able to purchase and download music straight from their phone, no desktop required. Apple executives are also excited about introducing facial recognition to enhance its mobile devices. The phone could be unlocked just for the owner, or photos with the names of friends and family could be automatically tagged, and then could be synced to iPhoto on a Mac.

Apple never fails to impress with its creative and innovative technology. Competition among smartphone producers will be fierce once the iPhone 5 is released. Apple's iPhone emphasizes how technology is revolutionizing the world of communications and the power of the Web. For those of you with iPhones, an amazing upgrade is coming soon!

SUWIC goes to NYC for NYWICI Conference!

On November 6, the executive board of SU Women in Communications attended the New York Women in Communications Student Career Conference at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City.

After an early-morning flight and an interesting cab ride, the stylish WIC members were excited to learn about all of the new developments in the media industry. After a heavenly breakfast courtesy of the Hyatt, attendees listened to a welcome address from Linda Kaplan Thaler, President of New York Women in Communications. She is also CEO and Chief Creative Officer of the Kaplan Thaler Group, one of the fastest-growing advertising agencies in the U.S. Helen Wagner, PR manager for 3M also spoke. Mara Schiavocampo, a correspondent for NBC News, gave the keynote address.

The enthusiastic young women left the grand ballroom and went about their day attending their chosen panel sessions. "Broadcast and Cable Journalism," "Digital Marketing and Social Media," "Marketing/Integrated Communications," "Newspaper/Wireless/Online Reporting," "Communications Entrepreneurship," "Advertising," "Magazine Writing for Print and Web," "Public Relations" and "Visual Communications" were featured panels. Professionals on each panel openly discussed their experiences and offered great advice about getting ahead in a challenging, yet rewarding industry.

After a whirlwind of day of panels, students returned to the ballroom for a closing panel entitled "Secrets to a Successful Job Search." Directors from major companies such as Katz Media Group and iVillage-NBC Universal answered questions about cover letters, resumes, internships and interview tips. All panelists stressed the importance of having great knowledge of the company you wish to work for before an interview.

With gift bags in hand, SUWIC members explored Manhattan for a few hours before heading back to campus. The executive board had a wonderful day networking with media professionals and is excited to put their skills to good use!

TRICKS OF THE TRADE: Finding Your Best Internship by Kellianne Jones

When starting out on my internship search last year, I remember sitting at my computer, staring at Google with my fingers hanging over the keyboard, and trying to think of news networks. I’d type in “ABC internships” and “CNN internships”. I think this is the way most students begin their internship search.

Unless you have been dreaming of working at a particular place your whole life, this method gets you nowhere. Not only are these big-name internships usually expensive (they require you to pay for college credit) and competitive (everyone applies for them), it’ll show if you don’t truly care about the company and what it stands for. You’ll send out a generic cover letter and chances are, you’ll never get hired. That’s why you should apply for internships at companies that do work you admire.

TIP #1: Think about what you like
Think about the show on Current TV you never want to miss or the website you love to check out to get your news. If you are digging Current TV’s journalists more than CNN’s, there’s a reason for that. It’s no secret that many of the mass media companies are in trouble- maybe the future lies within these smaller, obscure companies that are gaining a loyal following. Get an internship at a place like this and in a few years, you’ll be patting yourself on the back for making connections in a place where you can actually use them.

Examples of ways to find media you are passionate about:
- Take a walk through Blockbuster or Barnes & Noble to find some movie titles that intrigue you. Look for festival winners to find the names of some up-and-coming production companies.
- Think about commercials that you can’t get out of your head and find out the name of the advertising agency.
- Listen to talk shows on the radio.
- Look at industry or topic-related blogs that you subscribe to.
- Search around Twitter to find companies that are exercising great PR, and find out if they offer internships in their publicity department.

Look on the company’s website for internship details or contact information, and send them a persuasive cover letter and resume. If you decide that a big-name internship is still the best option for you, think about finding one in a web department or find a newspaper or magazine that has good online readership. This means they are working hard to survive in the new media environment.

TIP #2: Think of other ways to build your resume
Maybe you don’t land the internship of your dreams. Or maybe they only have you coming to the office 2 times a week. This does happen. There’s plenty of other ways to boost your experience.

Aspiring travel-writers can contribute to websites such as Matador or Glimpse to get some articles published. If you are a magazine major, I’m sure you subscribe to online magazines or blogs- see if they are willing to take you on as a contributor. An aspiring PR professional can become web-savvy by tweeting about the industry. Look for things that are web-based (since we all know that’s the way the industry is headed) so you can increase your presence online. Although you probably wouldn’t want these things to be your sole internship for the summer, they can serve as supplements that might just make your resume stand out.

Photographers can contribute to online photography sites such as Vewd or submit some of your work to sites like Burn or Making Room. You could even make contacts on these sites by emailing the photographer of a feature you loved to let them know you admired their work. If you are in a major city while you are interning, check out the gigs section in Craigslist. Professional photographers post there all the time looking for a production assistant for a day or weekend shoot. This will be a good way add some interesting experience to your resume and make some new connections.

Newspaper reporting is one of the most interesting professions around. Although it is rapidly changing due to the ever-increasing presence of the Web, many people are still loyal newspaper readers. This section offers tips dealing with the formation of the lead, supporting the lead, and interviewing techniques.

The news lead is an objective sentence that does not exceed 35 words and has no more than one comma. It is imperative that the lead contain all necessary information in order for the reader to grasp the main idea and continue to the next article. The lead should be interesting; the reader should want to keep reading the article. This sentence should be declarative, and active voice should be used; it is more powerful. Adjectives and adverbs must not dominate the lead. Writing consisting of excess modifiers is not as forceful as writing containing descriptive verbs. Also, unfamiliar names should not be used in the lead. It is easier for readers to understand the story if they are first presented with recognizable information.

The next paragraph of the article is the explanation of the lead, or “backing up the lead.” It is in this section where details are inserted, names are given, and the significance of the article is explained. Questions posed by the lead are answered here. Depending on the length of the article, this paragraph sums up the story with a conclusion. The conclusion should be clear and succinct, as well as provide a strong closing for the story.

Interviewing is one of the most common methods of obtaining information. When interviewing, it is important that you have a goal in mind, in addition to a focused commentary. The reporter should keep a conversational tone throughout the interview. Research on the interviewee prior to the interview is significant; the reporter is more prepared and knows which type of questions to ask. In order for the interview to be successful, do not move on to the next question until you are satisfied that the previous question was answered completely and thoroughly. More importantly, keep questions short and simple. It is easier for the interviewee to answer questions that are more direct.

Once the reporter is finished writing the article, a number of steps must be adhered to before the article is ready for publication. In order to ensure accuracy, facts cited in the story must be verified. It is also important to eliminate spelling and grammatical errors, as they can be a distraction to the reader. News writers should be familiar with the journalistic style when creating a piece, and should reference The Associated Press Stylebook, the industry standard for journalistic writing style.

Establish your criteria: You need to know your purpose, location, and credit options.
Review existing internship opportunities: Look online and in the CDC for current postings.
Identify additional internship opportunities: Look for more info in the NH "Industry Directories", yellow pages, chambers of commerce, NACAN, trade magazines, and the Career Services "Vault" in Schine.
Call companies or visit websites to get more detailed info on the internships: Look for info about requirements, contacts, start dates, submission deadlines, and departmental specifications.
Apply to your internships: The CDC recommends applying to three to twelve opportunities.
Follow up and maintain contact: Every few weeks should remind them you're interested.

Want to know about and keep up with the latest trends in fashion? With the accessibility of the Internet and user-friendly blogging sites, almost anyone can create a blog and be considered a fashionista nowadays. But which sites are the cream of the crop? Here are just some of my top picks that never fail to inspire and that I promise will always keep you coming back for more!

The Cut
New York Magazine has a great fashion blog on their site that they feature called “The Cut.” Blogger Amy Odell’s posts daily on the season’s hottest trends, beauty tips, celebrity fashion news, and what is going on currently in the fashion world-both off and on the runway. What I really like about this blog is the variety of topics the reader has available to them. One day there will be a post about where to find “rare vintage finds at Saffron” in Brooklyn and the next day there will be a post about Vera Wang’s new bridal collection. I would say this blog is definitely appealing to many audiences with all different styles and interests.

Go Fug Yourself
This daily blog takes a humorous and witty spin on current celebrity fashion. We always think of the stars as stylish and constantly getting it right, but not here. On this site bloggers Heather and Jessica poke fun at celebrities by calling their fashion decisions as “fantastically ugly” or plainly put, “fugly.” However, sometimes the blog lets the readers decide what is to be considered “fugly” through its featured polls.

Frugal Fashionistas
Saving money can be tough in the current economy, especially for college students. That’s why “Frugal Fashionistas” is an awesome website that shows how easy it is to save money without sacrificing style. The blog features expensive celebrity outfits on one side of its posts, while displaying the money saving alternatives on the other. Most of the celebrity outfits featured on this blog can be copied for more than half of the cost! Now who wouldn’t love that?!

The Sartorialist
This blog is a favorite of mine, it is filled with so much inspiration and real down to earth style. Scott Schuman (aka “The Sartorialist”) is considered to be one of the first to begin street fashion photography. In 2005, after Schuman left his job as a fashion sales director, he decided to carry around a digital camera on the streets of New York City seeking stylish people. He began capturing peoples’ looks that he felt were appealing and unique, showing that the world that fashion did not just happen on the runways.

“The Sartorialist” shows that fashion--and more importantly style-- can be found simply on the streets among a variety of people. Daily a quick post is made on this blog, usually consisting a picture of a real, random person off the street. The pictures are mainly taken on the streets of New York but expect to find photos from Paris, Italy and other international hotspots!

Stitch Society
The Stitch Society is a street fashion blog that can be easily compared to The Sartorialist, however the great part about it is that it takes place right in our own Syracuse University! Starting in 2007 the team of bloggers began to look “for independently minded students who [were] fueling the fashion trends [on] campus.” On the site you can expect to see an array of photos taken of Syracuse University students going about their everyday activities, yet looking great and effortless while doing them. What I like most about this blog is that there is no one particular type of style or trend that is focused on. Through each post, a different person and thus style is shown-making the blog itself more personal and exciting!

College Fashionista: Syracuse Edition
This site focuses primarily on collegiate fashion trends from all over the country. However, the side bar on the left features various schools with their own individual college fashionista blogs, one of these schools being Syracuse University! When clicked, you can see the latest trends and styles students are wearing on campus. It is updated daily by SU’s very own fashion students-Hannah, Jenny, Stephanie and Maria Nicole. This is definitely a great site to keep updated on all the latest news pertaining to the fashion world of Syracuse University.

'Cuse Clothes Line
Also from SU is this blog, featuring a variety of posts including street style, how to be stylish on a budget, and commentaries on runway fashion. What I like the most about this fashion blog is that they have posts that show how runway looks can be incorporated to everyday life. For example, one post shows that animal prints are very popular on the runway this season and can easily be incorporated to everyday life through accessories such as scarves. There are many other posts just as these if you the blog out!

SUWICI Goes to NYC for the NYWICI Conference!

On November 7, five SU Women in Communications members had the privilege of attending the New York Women in Communications Student Career Conference at the Grand Hyatt hotel in New York City.

Despite being a bit groggy from an early-morning flight, the WIC members were ready to gain some valuable insight into the world of communications. After a delicious breakfast provided by the Hyatt, attendees enjoyed inspiring speeches by Helen Wagner, PR Manager for 3M, and NBC’s Today show correspondent Sara Haines.

Students then left the grand ballroom to attend their chosen panel sessions on topics ranging from TV production to public relations. Each panel featured communications professionals who discussed their experiences and offered practical advice about getting ahead in the ultra-competitive field. (And SU was well represented! Newhouse grads Ron Stitt, VP of Digital Media for Fox Television Stations, and Jayme S. Ganey, Associate Editor of Essence Magazine, served as panelists).

After attending the informative panels sessions, all students returned to the ballroom for a final panel discussion entitled “Secrets to a Successful Job Search.” HR managers from top companies such as the Hearst Corporation and FOX candidly answered students’ questions about resumes, internships, and everything in between. All panelists stressed the importance of researching the company you wish to work for before your interview, as well as maintaining a professional online profile for potential employers to see.

After the conference, SUWIC members explored the city for a few hours before hopping on a flight back to campus, where they are eager to put the knowledge they’ve acquired into action!

Dress For Success will take place on Tuesday, December 8 at 7pm in Grant Auditorium (in the College of Law).

ABC News correspondent Jan Crawford Greenburg will visit Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Wednesday, Sept. 23, as a guest of the Carnegie Legal Reporting Program. The event is free and open to the public.

Greenburg is based in Washington, D.C., where she covers the Supreme Court and provides legal analysis for all ABC News broadcasts. She is the author of “Supreme Conflict: The Inside Story of the Struggle for Control of the United States Supreme Court” (Penguin Press, 2007).

Prior to joining ABC, Greenburg was the national legal affairs reporter for the Chicago Tribune, where she covered the Supreme Court and national legal issues, including judicial appointments and confirmation battles. She won the Tribune’s top reporting award in 2001, as part of a team of reporters that covered the 2000 presidential election and the subsequent legal battles over the White House. She won the same award for a 13-part series on the South, a generation after the Civil Rights Movement, in 1996.

Ed Hersh is currently an adjunct at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, where he is teaching an advanced course on the business of television. He is also the founder and chief creative officer of StoryCentric LLC, a New York-based company that provides insights on storytelling, execution, and media trends to both networks and content creators. Among his most recent projects are the development and launch of Blueprint America, a year-long PBS multi-platform initiative on America’s crumbling infrastructure.

But Tye is also of interest because of a number of his other accomplishments. A former reporter at the Anniston Star in Alabama, the Louisville Courrier-Journal and the Boston Globe, he has won numerous prizes for his coverage of medicine, the environment, sports, government and
business.

In addition to the Bernays biography, he has written other books: Home Lands: Portraits of the New Jewish Diaspora and Rising from the Rails: Pullman Porters and the Making of the Black Middle Class. He has co-written (with Kitty Dukakis) Shock: The Healing Power of Electroconvulsive Therapy. His biography of Negro League baseball legend Satchel Paige is due out in June.

Directed by Ron Howard, “Frost/Nixon” explores the story behind journalist David Frost’s 1977 interview of former president Richard Nixon—the first interview Nixon had granted since resigning from the presidency three years earlier. The film is billed as “the untold story of the historic encounter that changed the relationship between journalism and politics forever.”

Tony Award winner Frank Langella ’59 plays Nixon, and Michael Sheen plays Frost. The screenplay was written by Peter Morgan. Associate producer William M. Connor ’89 will introduce the film and take part in a question-and-answer session following the screening.

Antony Young, president of the media agency Optimedia US, will speak on "Profitable Marketing Communication: Strategies for Delivering Marketing Return on Investment." The event is free and open to the public.

Young began his 20-year international advertising career in New Zealand and has held senior management roles in Asia/Pacific, Europe and the United States, including as CEO of ZenithOptimedia Asia, based in Hong Kong, and as CEO of ZenithOptimedia UK Group, based in London. Under his leadership, ZenithOptimedia Asia was twice named Media Agency of the Year by Media magazine, and won Asia's first-ever Cannes Media Gold Lion. Antony was also a founding partner of a specialist digital marketing venture.

Young has developed strategy and executed media campaigns for brands across the globe, including Sony, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Nokia, Procter & Gamble and Toyota.

He is co-author of "Profitable Marketing Communications" (Kogan Page, 2007), a business marketing book that details the ways in which world-class companies deliver marketing return on investment.

In 2003, Mediaweek named Young one of the top 25 most influential people in the UK media industry.

Optimedia, which specializes in media and communications strategy, manages more than $2 billion in media billings with offices located in six cities.
